Emerald Lake, Crested Butte, Colorado

On Sunday we wanted to drive up to the punch bowls up by Schofield Pass. The punch bowls are a "4-Wheel" Drive road but I would that if you value your life do not drive up there, hike instead! It is beautiful and we wanted to hike around. We headed up that way but Lily was awful all weekend and no fun in the car so we ended our trip about 20 minutes early. Instead we stopped at Emerald Lake. Emerald Lake is a very high mountain lake.

In order to get there you take Hwy 135 North from Gunnison, through Crested Butte (where it turns into Gothic Road), up through Mt. Crested Butte, where it eventually turns into dirt, through the town of Gothic up and up and up and eventually you will see a beautiful green lake on your left. That is Emerald Lake. It is about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours from Gunnison.

We stopped at Emerald Lake, hiked around, took pictures, played and relaxed.

I can't believe Mikayla waded in as much as she did because it was cold.

Lily set up camp right next to the lake piling rocks up and then throwing them into the lake. It is a good thing I had another change of clothes for her.

The dogs has fun on their day out.

Some of the wildflowers were taller than Lily.

This is the view from the lake.

My hubby.

This is a picture of Mikayla I took at our house. The stream in our back yard forms a pond when it is high in the spring and early summer. Now it is a mud pit and Mikayla has so much fun getting dirty.

What a beautiful place! It looks like you had fun.

And I just have to say: your dogs are HUGE. At first glance, I thought that one of your dogs was a mountain lion! Ha!

Just curious, it sounded like you could drive to Emerald Lake? My husband and children went there in the middle 70's and the only way to get there was to hike in. The pictures were beautiful. I want to go back.

Anonymous - You can drive to Emerald Lake now. At one point it gets very narrow for a short section but it quickly opens back up. It also depends on the time of year as well. Most of the time you can drive up to Emeral Lake by July 4th but sometimes after a huge snow year you cannot drive up there until August.
